Meet our new Human Resources Director Kara!
Name: Kara Mittan
Position: Human Resources Director
Can you tell us about your background?
I have many years of experience in Human Resources and have had the opportunity to work in several different roles in the field, starting as an HR Assistant at Staples Corporate. I have done everything from recruiting to directing departments in a variety of industries including aerospace, education tech start-ups, finance tech, & medical devices. This is my first time in the cannabis industry, and it is truly intriguing
What made you want to work in the cannabis industry?
I found it to be a fascinating and up and coming industry. I was really interested in the science part of it and all the research that goes into creating & testing products to make people safe and help improve their lives. Improving people’s lives is one of the reasons I enjoy working in HR in general so it’s a perfect fit.
What drew you to MCR?
The science aspect and company culture. From my first interview, people have been welcoming and knowledgeable. It seemed like a company that was growing fast and really valued its employees and I wanted to be a part of that culture and growth.
What’s an average workday look like for you?
An average day consists of everything from assisting with employee relations and career development to aiding with project growth in other departments. I try to be a mentor to other HR folks on the team and really just develop and further the culture of MCR.
What’s your favorite part of the job so far?
Definitely the people. I felt embraced from the first interview to the day I started. Even with virtual meetings and calls I have felt welcomed and included. I really like the inclusive environment we have here. It’s not daunting being the new kid.
What are some of the most interesting things you’ve learned about cannabis since you started?
I am constantly learning about all the different parts of the plant and the tests that go along with growing and making products. For example, I never knew people had to look out for heavy metals in their cannabis. Also, learning about the different products we have is really interesting. I had never seen edibles before and there are so many different kinds out there and tests that exist to make them safe. It is all so new and exciting.
What excites you the most about cannabis and this rapidly growing industry?
What is most exciting to me is seeing the benefits that cannabis can have on people and on their health. Even pets are getting cannabis now! Learning all of these uses and potential has really opened my eyes. Everyday I learn something new. Watching the passion people have and their excitement makes me excited.
What is one piece of advice you’d give someone trying to break into the cannabis industry?
Have a curious and open mindset. Show that you are eager and willing to learn. Don’t be narrow minded; be a sponge and let the knowledge flood in.
What do you like to do outside of work in your free time?
I love going to Disney World, it transports you back to childhood and a simpler time. I love collecting the mickey ears. I try to go as much as I can in my free time; it’s where my heart is.
